There Was a Time When Easy Mac Taste Good
Mac'n'Cheese is something that I am really passionate about. This may be the most important piece of writing I ever do in my life. I mean, hopefully not, but you never know. I know that cooking macaroni and cheese from scratch has the best results. However, it's awfully time-consuming. I regularly use packet mac and cheese due to the convenience factor. So, I thought I'd share my thoughts with you.
All of the mac packs are shown here, so that you know what you're looking for in the supermarket! Also, my cactus is there because he's just so cute.
I've reviewed three types of packet mac and cheese for you lovely people to make your supermarket decisions easier. If you're pressed for time, scroll down to find a bright and slightly-childish infographic I made with all the info you need. Without further ado, here's three of the most prominent packet mac and cheese brands' best and worst qualities in scrupulous detail.
Mac Number 1: Easy Mac
Easy Mac in all its garbage glory.
Ah, Easy Mac. The easiest of the macs. Easy Mac is what I make when I stumble home at 3am and I'm too many vodkas down to prepare any 'real food'. Alternatively, it's the this-assignment-is-due-in-two-hours-and-I-have-no-time-to-cook meal that I wolf down in front of the computer. I always keep some Easy Mac around for those specific purposes. That doesn't mean it's not delicious! The taste is… 'okay' for a sober person and 'real good' for a drunk person. However, if I have time, or functioning motor skills, I usually go for one of the other options on the list. It's just not outstanding. Also, you need two packets to get a decent serving size. Easy Mac used to be relatively expensive, but over the past month I have noticed that it seems to be perpetually on special, so I have given it two dollar signs for price.
Easy Mac is like Ru Paul's Drag Race: it's kind of trash, but kind of amazing. Enjoy both drunk and sober!
Mac Number 2: Kraft
Kraft Mac n' Cheese.
Bachelorette number two, Kraft is basically a heritage brand for mac n cheese. Kraft tastes better than Easy Mac and the macaroni itself is a much nicer size. Kraft is the 'classic'. It tastes pretty good and it really has that American trash-cooking vibe about it. Kraft is also expensive. I have no idea why because you have to add milk and butter and cook it on the stovetop. Why am I doing all of this to get a slightly-better version of Easy Mac? It's pretty time consuming. Because of this, I don't really rate Kraft all that highly. Yeah, it taste good. It tastes like I'm in an American suburban cul-de-sac and after my mac I'm going to ride my bike to my best friend's house (who conveniently lives two blocks away). So, you personally might think it's worth the manual labour. Me? I'll stick to the microwave.
Kraft is theTwin Peaks of mac n cheese: I feel like the effort I'm putting in to get through it isn't 100% worth the reward. That said, it's also an absolute classic and cult favourite. Or so I'm told.
Mac Number 3: San Remo
San Remo is amazing. Before I started writing this article, I had already picked San Remo as my favourite. This slightly-orange gooey slop is miles above its competitors in terms of flavour (as in, it actually has some). You do have to add your own butter and milk. However, you can shove the whole thing in the microwave for ten minutes and walk away. So in terms of ease it's pretty darn simple. The instructions say to use boiling water and stir multiple times but you don't actually need to do either of those things. Also, one packet is a large enough serving size for a meal and it's very inexpensive! The packaging is a little different than it's competitors so it's easy to dismiss it as garbage. But, once you give it a chance, you won't look back.
If San Remo were a show, it would be Riverdale : you're initially unsure what to expect but then you're pleasantly surprised at how cheesy and great it is. Then, you binge on it (make sure you check out Amy's review of Riverdale, which I wholeheartedly agree with).
Let me know your thoughts on these, or any other, mac n cheese packets that you've tried! I love suggestions!
Infographic inspiration comes from the (much more sophisticated) recipes that Fi made for her mug cakes article. Check those out for an easy dessert to follow your mac n cheese!
